Hi, my name is Jake Velicer, and I am a game developer extremely interested in creating passionate storytelling experiences for it is those types of games that drove me to this career in the first place. I’ve always had fun letting stories impact me on an emotional level and video games allow me to take the driver seat when it comes to experiences like that.
I have had great experiences here at Bradley University and am learning new things as a creative everyday. In the Fall of 2019 I was able to participate in a design internship at F84 Games and Change Lab in Los Angeles. Both were very important in strengthening my knowledge about game design and professional workflow. I have learned how to use professional industry tools such as Unity, the Adobe Suite, Maya, ZBrush, and several programming languages.
My ultimate career goal is to be a part of making impactive, interactive storytelling experiences via it be through video games, movies, VR, 360 video, or any other mediums that come about. I want to be a part of projects that make people feel!
Untouchable is a sci-fi themed 3D platforming runner. Players must run from the moving laser wall by jumping from platform to platform to survive. Players must also dodge appearing obstacles by weaving around them or by rotating the tunnel of platforms. By nearly missing obstacles, the player slowly charges their invisibility power up so that they can be UNTOUCHABLE for a brief period of time. Development on Untouchable started in November 2019 and ended in December. The game was made in Unity for a class focused on rapid prototyping. I was a programmer on the project. I was tasked with making the wall rotation mechanic, the obstacle spawning system, and some of the obstacles such as the shocking platform.
Vociferous Patch Attack
Vociferous Patch Attack is a cooperative, 2D, top down, shooter. Players must drive around a map fighting off hordes of gremlins with the goal of repairing the relays that keep them out. Players must scream into the mic to repair the relays as well as their own vehicles. The catch? When players are repairing, they cannot move or shoot. Players must work together to time their shouting or silence properly so they don’t get overwhelmed by the alien invasion. Vociferous Patch Attack was made within 48 hours during the 2020 Global Game Jam. The theme of the jam was repair. I joined my teammates Warren Guiles and Ryan Voss shortly after the prompt was announced to nail down our design. Warren and I programmed the mechanics in Unity while Ryan worked on the artwork. I implemented the driving and shooting mechanics, as well as the functionality of the relays. Within such a short period of time, we were pretty happy with how polished of a product we were able to make.
Potion Problems is a fantasy themed time-attack, puzzle game. Players must add ingredients around the potion master's shop into the cauldron within a certain amount of time or the potion will explode! The catch, each ingredient added applies a mini game effect to the shop that the player must navigate to obtain the next ingredient. Adding all the ingredients in the cauldron in time results in a win. Development on Potion Problems took place during the month of October 2019. The game was made in Unity for a class focused on rapid prototyping. I was a designer and programmer on the project. I came up with the black hole effect and the drunken blur effect. I implemented them both into the game. I was also responsible for programming the pick-up/put-down mechanic.
